DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) – After two years of construction, Methodist University Hospital officially opened its renovated and expanded Emergency Department in September 2014. The updated facility more than doubles the space of the former emergency unit, representing a significant investment in patient care for the downtown Memphis community and surrounding areas.

Expanded Capacity and Modern Features at Methodist University Hospital

The new emergency department includes 16 fully equipped patient treatment areas, each designed to offer greater comfort, more space, and better efficiency for both patients and care teams. Larger treatment rooms allow for improved workflows and more privacy during critical care situations.

In addition to the expanded interior, the hospital has also added a larger, more accessible ambulance entrance. A new rooftop heliport enhances emergency access even further, allowing helicopters to land directly above the department and speeding up trauma transfers when minutes matter most.

A Boost for Downtown and West Memphis Patients

Hospital leadership expressed excitement over what the new space means for the local population. Dr. Ray Walther of Methodist University Hospital explained, “Access to health care downtown has been limited. This expansion opens the door for more patients in the area. It gives them convenient access to critical services. With the West Memphis facility closing, this also becomes a vital resource for those residents.”
