How Clarity™ Switchable Privacy Glass Works
Clarity™ uses PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) technology laminated between two layers of glass.
- Power On: Transparent – Crystals align to allow light and clear views
- Power Off: Private – Crystals scatter, creating a frosted effect that protects privacy

Clarity™ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Clarity™ a film applied to existing glass?
No. Clarity™ is a fabricated glass product with the PDLC switchable layer laminated between panes of glass. It is not a surface-applied retrofit film.
Does Clarity™ require electricity?
Yes. Electrical power aligns the liquid crystals and makes the glass transparent. When power is removed, the glass returns to its translucent private state.
What happens during a power outage?
Clarity™ returns to its unpowered translucent private state when electrical power is unavailable.
Does Clarity™ provide complete blackout?
No. The private state obscures visibility while continuing to transmit diffused light. A different product should be considered when complete light blocking is required.
How quickly does Clarity™ switch between transparent and opaque?
Clarity™ switches states in approximately 45 milliseconds at room temperature.
Can multiple Clarity™ panels operate together?
Yes. Multiple panels can be configured to switch together when the transformer, controls, and wiring are properly sized for the total glass area.
Can Clarity™ be used in doors and partitions?
Yes. Clarity™ can be incorporated into doors, sidelights, windows, and interior glass partitions. The appropriate glass construction and electrical details depend on the application.
Is fire-rated Clarity™ available?
Clarity™ can be configured with certain fire-rated glazing products. Contact PGS to confirm compatibility, ratings, sizes, and construction requirements for the project.
